Ideas: Projects to do at Home

Perhaps it’s a rainy day and you’re stuck inside? Or maybe you don’t have the time and/or transportation to visit areas where there are huge needs that you would like to help with. There are still many ways your family can help – from your very own home!

  • Make recycled craft project kits – including all of the supplies and instructions – to give to children in a low-income preschool or after-school program. Make sure that the age of the children matches the age of the project! (Then they can have fun making cool art projects!) (View from Trash to Treasures for some specific ideas and to find a book list with additional ideas!)
  • Make cards for people who may be feeling lonely or might need their day brightened. A card or short note is a nice surprise to receive in the mail on any occasion.
  • Clean out your closets and give away clothing, toys, and games you do not use or need to disadvantaged families.
  • Write letters and send care packages to troops living abroad.
  • Write letters and send care packages to students away at college or who are living abroad.
  • Research different issues that are important to you (for example, learn about ways to help the environment or the dangers of secondhand smoke or something else that you are passionate about). Write a special project you can share with your family about a specific topic. Learn how people can help and develop an action plan to carry out some of these ideas with your family.
  • Develop a new talent such as knitting or crocheting so that you can teach it to others or make useful items to give to those in need.
